When the pandemic hit, DeStefano-Tangorra joined the freelancing platform Upwork, pursuing technology and data analysis projects. Soon after, she left her corporate job to work full-time with clients on their data and intelligence strategy. "I decided, because my business started doing really well on the Upwork platform, that it was no longer a side business." Last year, there were 64 million Americans who freelanced for part or all of their income, making up 38% of the US workforce, per Upwork data. The other day, a friend of mine liked one of my LinkedIn posts. AdvertisementWhy LinkedIn feels so cringeAs much as LinkedIn is a professional platform, something about it feels really personal. There's a reason social-media accounts like Best of LinkedIn, which pokes fun at over-the-top LinkedIn posts, exist. Given the weakness of the official advice, I decided to ask a bunch of people for tips on how to post in a non-cringe way on LinkedIn. I also asked a pair of social-media managers — one at Business Insider and one at a different company — for their thoughts on LinkedIn posting.

Walmart quietly reduced its store count in 2023 even though the company was doing really well. In addition to closing underperforming stores, the retailer sold at least 79 small-format locations. Given what Walmart has planned for the next few years, the move away from smaller locations makes sense. "Walmart has always struggled with smaller stores," Saunders said. In addition to new stores, many existing locations are being upgraded to Walmart's "store of the future" concept, including 650 projects this year.

Fran Horowitz, Abercrombie & Fitch CEO: The future of retail is small, efficient, omni stores, and they're located where the customer tells us. I get really, really excited about what this means in the operations of the business, using predictive analytics to help us forecast demand. They're worldwide, a zillion stores, and their operations and execution, aside from their merchandising, I think they're always on top of the game. I think you're going to see an interaction with someone in a setting that doesn't look like retail, but looks like a fantastic experience. Polls indicate New Hampshire offers Haley her best chance for a win, while DeSantis, polling a distant third, is already looking ahead to South Carolina. While Tuesday's primary result is expected to be narrower, the latest polls of likely New Hampshire GOP primary voters show Trump leading Haley by double digits. They have been joined in recent days by a growing number of Trump's one time Republican primary rivals — Nebraska Gov. In New Hampshire, Haley is right: She and Trump are the top two candidates by far in the polls, with DeSantis a distant third. Days away from the New Hampshire primary, DeSantis' campaign is already shifting resources to South Carolina, while still holding some events in New Hampshire.

The World Economic Forum recently said generative artificial intelligence could replace 83 million jobs in the next five years within industries including tech and education under threat. Insider talked to a vice president of a data and AI platform, a hiring expert at LinkedIn, and an entrepreneur about three strategies to upskill to AI-proof your career. Karin Kimbrough, LinkedIn's chief economist, told Insider that such skills, including "management, communication, customer service, leadership, and teamwork," were more important to company leaders than AI skills . "Many bumps, turns, and forks you experience while navigating your career will become ever steeper and sharper," he wrote. She said learning how to become a "good prompter" was key to generating helpful responses from the chatbots.

There's a gap in how men and women perceive AI, a new poll found. The poll adds to a growing body of research that suggests AI will affect the jobs of men and women differently. In fact, 53% of women surveyed said they would ban their kids from using AI altogether, compared to 26% of men. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe findings on the AI gender gap is an addition to a growing body of research that suggests that the AI revolution will affect men and women differently. The gender gap also affects women already in the AI world: AI startups in the UK founded by women raised six times less than those founded by men over the last 10 years.

Yet for this genre, a more subtle factor might be the bad, no good, extraordinarily nasty “heroes” that have entered the chat, as Amazon’s “The Boys” spinoff “Gen V” concludes its first season and the animated “Invincible” begins its second. Like “The Boys,” “Gen V” has explored the corruptible side of superheroes, with its college-age characters at the appropriately named Godolkin University (God U, for short) yearning for a place among the Seven, the amoral heroes brought to the world by a shadowy corporation more interested in public relations and profits than the public good. Lizze Broadway, Jaz Sinclair and Maddie Phillips in "Gen V," the spinoff to Amazon's "The Boys." The fact that “The Boys,” “Gen V” and “Invincible” play on Prime Video merely reinforces that streaming has created hungry platforms for genre-friendly franchises – including raunchier ones, like Max’s “Peacemaker” – while further adding to the crush of viewing options featuring characters in capes and masks. “Gen V” concludes and “Invincible” begins its second season November 3 on Amazon’s Prime Video.

The Musk Versus Twitter of Trucking Mergers

Forward Air agreed to buy freight forwarder Omni Logistics. PAUL PAGE/THE WALL STREET JOURNALIn most children’s games, there are no takesies-backsies. A similar principle seems to apply when a company signs a pretty ironclad contract to buy another. Late on Tuesday, Dallas-based freight forwarder Omni Logistics said that it had filed a lawsuit against trucking company Forward Air asking for the Delaware Court of Chancery to enforce the merger agreement that both companies signed back in August. This follows a statement last week in which Forward said it might terminate the controversial acquisition, arguing that Omni—which happens to be one of its trusted suppliers—had failed to comply with merger obligations.

Republican presidential candidate, former Vice President Mike Pence speaks at the Pray Vote Stand Summit at the Omni Shoreham Hotel on September 15, 2023 in Washington, DC. Former Vice President Mike Pence on Thursday dumped on Donald Trump's plan to slap a universal 10% tariff on imported goods if he is reelected in 2024, slamming the idea as a "middle-class tax increase." An across-the-board tariff like the one Trump has proposed would worsen inflation and "reward adversaries like China," Pence's GOP presidential campaign said in an unusually sharp one-page memo. "He and his imitators in this race are backing away from American leadership," Pence said. Trump skipped the first debate last month, but he nevertheless stole much of the evening's attention.

US to continue deporting Haitians as it evacuates its citizens

REUTERS/Ralph Tedy Erol Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON/PORT-AU-PRINCE, Aug 31 (Reuters) - The United States will continue deporting Haitian migrants back to their country, a spokesperson from the Department of Homeland Security said on Thursday, amid worsening gang warfare that prompted it a day earlier to urge its own citizens to evacuate. "Removals of Haitian nationals encountered at our southern border and repatriation of Haitian nationals encountered at sea continue," the spokesperson said, noting the Biden administration had expanded parole processes for Haitian migrants. "Those interdicted at sea are subject to immediate repatriation, and those encountered in the United States without a legal basis to remain are subject to removal," they said. The United Nations and human rights group have called on the United States and other countries to stop this practice. U.S. border authorities encountered more than 125,000 Haitians between last October and July, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
